It's an 8-bit battle in Round #6 of the MOColympics as Dave Sterling goes up against Crimso Giger in the Atari category.
About this creation
Round #6
Dave Sterling vs. Crimso Giger
Category: Atari

I started this round about the same as I have started all the other rounds…with no idea what to build. In fact, after the categories were posted, I decided to take a few days and just think about what to build. Unfortunately, business travel came up meaning I had more days than I had originally thought to think about my idea…and subsequently less days to build. That said, I came home from my trip and put in many, many hours building what you see here…a replica Nintendo Entertainment System complete with two controllers, Tetris game cartridge, and TV.

So why did I decide to build an NES? I think mainly just to see if I could. I’ve never done something I would consider ‘art’ or ‘sculpture’ in LEGO and I really wanted to give it a try and see if I could recreate something directly to scale. I must say that it was a real challenge to get the dimensions and proportions correct, but I think I managed. The console, controllers, and cartridge are all within about a 1/16 of an inch of the actual dimensions. The TV was not really based on anything and was just my own little 13” TV creation.

I tried to capture all of the pertinent features of the NES from the front loading cartridge system and the spring loaded power buttons to the hook-up ports on the side and back for power, RCA out, and RF-out. Here you can see the side and back showing the hook-ups.

Here we have the controllers and the game cartridge. Why Tetris you ask? I just have always really liked the game. I think it’s the simplicity of the gameplay coupled with the puzzle challenge. It’s almost like a LEGO speed build where you get tossed pieces in a specific order. Hmmm…maybe an idea for a new build contest at a convention!

Another shot of the front of the NES. As I built this, I wanted to make sure to include as much functionality as possible in LEGO. The power and reset buttons are spring loaded using the Technic shock absorbers (we’ll see that later). In addition, I made the front loading cartridge system which I will detail in the next few photos.

First, open the cover that flips down over the loading slot.

Next, insert your favorite game cartridge…in this case Tetris.

Finally push down the loading system until it locks into place. Close the lid and turn on the power and you are ready to go!

Here is a demonstration of the spring loaded buttons I was talking about. You push them in and once you release they return back to their original position. This took some work to get right, but I love the look and the functionality.

After building the NES, controllers, and cartridge I felt that I needed something else which is when I decided to build a TV to complete the MOC. I went for a small TV (13” screen) like I had when I was a kid. It is even complete with the rabbit ears! I remember the days before cable. *shudder*

Well, I hope you have enjoyed looking at my LEGO NES and perhaps it brought about some nostalgia for those of you who were kids when the NES was in its prime. I know I enjoyed reliving the memories of the NES as I was building it. Good luck to my opponent Mr. Crimso Giger. Rock on kids...rock on.

Very nice replica of the NES. I really like the details of the spring loaded buttons, the cartridge door, and the fact you had to push the cartridge in. The cartridges and controllers came out very nice also, and I like the TV. The only thing that would really complete it is if you used red on the cartridge door where the Nintendo Entertainment System logo is supposed to be. Other then that minor detail, great job!

Congrats on moving on the final round. I have to say the amount of attention to the details and functionality you put into the console really put this MOC over the top. The overall visual is amazing, but the functionality really gives it that extra "wow" factor.

Congrat on the win ! Well done really - Don't pay attention to what I've wrote in a comment on my entry, I was just a bit sad, I don't mean in any way you don't deserves the win. Anyway I'll look froward for your next/final entry, you've got the honor of the AFOLs in your hand now and you'd make a great winner :-D

Cool! My favorite game of all time! In fact, my Tetris cartidge is still in the NES and it will never be taken off. I fear it will never work again if I took it out and put it back in. Remember the horror when the screen just starts blinking? And yes, blowing at the leads does not make it work... Rabbit ears, you say? I'm still using them to pick up digital signal! XD... Oh right, back to the comment... Well done! This would be a great museum piece!

WOW!!! This is an excellent display of building prowess Dave! Stacy must have hooked you up with the "Brutal Legend Deluxe Edition" to generate this type of build! The only thing missing is the Red logo. People can argue for Atari all they want, it was Nintendo who really made gaming a household event. *disclaimer, I am in know way saying Atari didn't have a hand in it. ;)

Dave, in my book this was the Lego version of a KO in the first five seconds of round 1!!!! I spent some time over at Crimso's page checking out his work, which was well done, and had a very unique approach (so it's not like you didn't have serious competition). But, I came here and all it took was the first pic! You've got my vote. Absolutely LOVE this!!! Great job on the system and the controllers, especially. "No wonder I can never get past level 4...THE CONTROLLER'S MADE OUT OF LEGO!!!!

Dave, you know if you let the demo go on the title screen and wait for the computer to score a Tetris, press and hold 'Start' and 'A' at that moment and you'll start your game with a Tetris! Oh, wait, this isn't a real NES? Nevermind.

Great creation idea! I like that you just didn't make a replica of it, but added some true to life features like the opening game slot and the sprung buttons. The design of the Television is great- nice style. The game controllers turned out really good, I especially like how you made the cord to connect it to the system itself. Great work! Keep building! -Anthony Dunne

Dave, IMO you trounced your opponent. The functionality and 'twist' on this theme thoroughly kicked your opponent's "honey bun". Best of luck with the other judges. Lee.

Quoting Moodswim . This is absolutely amazing! The amount of detail you put into this, PLUS it's in scale, PLUS you made certain parts spring-loaded, just blows my mind! But, if the category is Atari, why did you make a Nintendo console?
Chris clarified that it was really more of a 'classic video games' theme. He wanted stuff from pre-1995. Since I never had an Atari, but did own an NES, I decided to go with that. :-)

All was well until you inserted the cartridge into the console, now my head just exploded! As if it weren't enough to create a TV, console with controllers and the game cartridge, you have to go and make it all functional! I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if you can actually plug it in and play! I'm not sure how I'm managing this comment sans head but I think it has something to do with the magnifisance of the build.BRAVO and good luck with the judges!~H
