About this creation
Well, I was going to keep this little project a secret until closer to BrickWorld, but...
May I present, Superman's summer home, the Fortress of Solitude!
Here's an upclose shot of the criss crossing spires at the front entrance. This build is of course just in the begining stages so some changes are expected. This is already the third version of these spires.

Another shot of the front (because basically, that's all I've done so far that's worth showing). I really like how the blue from behind the curved walls bleeds through when the light hits it. Should look pretty cool for the world of lights portion of BrickWorld.

Here's a shot of the interior. Yes there WILL be a full interior on this build. I'm going for a "playset" feel to the build. Also, the two 48 by 48 baseplates that this is set on so far is only HALF of the total imagined set up. I want to add two more to the back... but I'm not saying "yes" to that juuuuuust yet. The only reason I'm even showing the interior at this point is... you see those doors at the center?

Ohhhh, Ahhhh... they open! HAHAHA Like I told ya, "playset" feel.

A final shot of the front exterior. In case some of you were wondering... and I know you were... I've already built one version of the "large" spires that will go on the top of the fortress to give it that "classic" look. Now all I have to do is figure out a way to attach them to the rest of the build and I'll be good...

And that's it for now. The sad part is that I've already pretty much wiped out my white brick reserves... Time to hit PAB!
Fourth Wall Commentary: I decided to let this little secret out of the bag for one reason, and one reason only. Last year, I had a GREAT idea for BrickWorld that never panned out and I never even started the build. This year, not only do I have a cool (pun intended) idea, but I've actually started on it this time! Kelso is always saying that he posts "build journal entries" to basically MAKE him finish the build. That's what I'm doing here. If I show that I've started it, I can't just say "Screw it, no one will ever know if I scrap this thing for parts." Now that you guys all know that I'm doing it, I HAVE to finish it.
I've already shared this with some people behind the scenes and I'd like to quote the almighty Kelso here. (Paraphrased for MOCpages) "Lookin good Chris... could be your best build yet... don't "F" it up!"
Thanks for the words of encouragement Mark. I'll do my best not to let you down!
Till next time true believers!

Now all we need are official Lego Superman sets!. That'd be so sweet to have minifigs of Superman, Lex Luthor and Lois Lane. They can leave out Jimmy Olsen. hehe.

Nice! I like that creative entrance a lot. Cody G. commented on this creation of mine and suggested I showed you it: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/184688
He said you might get some ideas from it.
Hope it might be some help. Thanks! |

I would have expected a fortress of sin, but this works too. Lee.
No, the fortress of sin is my next build for the Sterling's layout. And you should have gotten the updates on the interior of this build in your email. NEED MORE WHITE 2X4 BRICK! |

You've done ole Superman proud here, its pure 1970s art built with great talent and incredible patience. I can't even begin to describe how jealous I am of your building skills and the shear volume of your brick collection. Keep all that white out of the sun and whatever you do don't drop it... |

awesome to see soembody make a version this good. I made one...but let's just say it's not exactly the whole thing. :) the outside looks great, especially the spires by the entrance. what I'd really love is lots of detailed rooms in the interior, like the armory or Superman's weird zoo for aliens. I can't believe this is only the first stage, it looks almost perfect already!!! |

Ahhhh, every man's true dream, The Fortress of Solitude. Would you believe that is what I named my den when my oldest daughter moved out and her room became my LEGO 'studio'? The acoustics down the hall are great; I can clearly hear my wife when she starts singing 'All By Myself' as I'm playing, er, building. LMAO Love the crystal spires, you trans hoarding MOFO!~H |

Looking good, be nice to see the finished article (photos only, the chances of me getting to any US convention are roughly those of me winning the Nobel prize for axe-juggling). I'm hoping for a "kneel before Zod" moment to be incorported here, or if not at least some 'kneel before...' themed innuendo. |

Chris, when did you get so good? I have to admit that this is just great, well thought out, and creative. The unique colors, design, and shapes will make this stand out at BW. I can see where all of those trans pieces will make this a stunning piece during the world of lights. Overall your doing a fantastic job here and I hope that you truly don't mess it up. -Dylan |

Wow you sure do have alot of clear studs!~NN
Those two curved walls on the front have about 500 clear studs each (1,000 total). I'm not sure how many 1x1 and 1x2 clear plates I've used so far. Let's go conservative and call it 500 of those and about 150 clear cheese slopes so far. Here's the scary thing... I need MORE!
